I love Deep Purple, but to say that any of the band members were the best at their positions in 1973 is a huuuuuuuuuge stretch! Jon Lord doesn't compare to Rick Wright of Pink Floyd, Rick Wakeman of Yes, or John Paul Jones of Led Zeppelin; Ian Paice can't come close to John Bonham, Neil Peart, Keith Moon, to name a few; and Blackmore, while technically superior to nearly everyone, lacks the soul of Page, Clapton, Beck, Gilmour, Townsend; and as for vocals... DP are a working class band.

I don't think that Jimmy was out of his head so much that he couldn't play the music he (and the band) played that night. RP seemed a bit spaced out if anything. He went off-key occasionally (not on this video), more so on the TUF song. We drove from Durham to this gig at EC, and it was the second-best concert ever seen. The best ever? Frank at Edinburgh...

Its not like Jimmy was the first person to hold his guitar like that. Jimi was actually compying Marc Bolan in just about all aspects of his on stage appearance and movements. Hes only known as the first person to do it because he was the most popular at the time thanks mostly to the stolen riffs of Stairway and Dazed and Confused and the stolen lyrics of Whole Lotta Love, the bands three biggest early songs.

Indeed they were. And they were also touring relentlessly and winding up on bills with so many different bands. But it was a different time back then as quality live bands were abundant and the economics allowed one to see 3 and 4 bands on one bill for a reasonable price. RT always delivered the goods though James Dewar was a big part of the sound.

Saw Trower, Dewar and Co. back in '75 at the Reading Festival--absolutely magic! Frankie Miller wrote this song, which I'm sure is from the Jude days. Well, when it comes to guitar tone and vibrato, I place him at the top. #1. Can't think of another guitarist that has dedicated more of his career (And Leslie's been playing almost 50 years) to perfecting his tone and vibrato. Corky does seem to hit 'em hard. And clean. I saw them play in a small bar and was surprised at what a loud crack he can get out of a snare. He broke a few sticks that night, but he can grab a new one pretty darn quick. He's had lots of practice. :)

This is awsome! First hear of Mountain in 1972 when i was 14! This video is just brill and just shows what a great rock band they are, nothing can touch them. I have always said the 'Dream Sequence' is the best driving music ever! And 'Roll over Beethovan' is the the best cover ever!. I just wish i could get this off YouTube for my car! I think the best bit is from 6:40.. its so powerful and i cant get enough of it ! Thanks for sharing this part of history with us.

Leslie West's 'signature tone' from 1969 to 1971 or 1972 was, to a certain extent, a result of plugging the Junior into a Sunn Coliseum PA amplifier. Turning up the individual volume control of one of its microphone inputs will provide distortion of the kind that we hear from West during this period, when a guitar is played through it.

Robin Trower played a 73 and maybe a 74 on the recording of the Bridge of Sighs album, one black and one white in color (great symbolism too, although I doubt it was meant that way). He apparently picked them up at Max's in NYC right before the 17 days of recording, of which he had 7 or so to pick from and spend a number of hours trying them all out before making his selection of the two he took to the studio.

Holy smokes! I have never heard anyone get that close to Henrix! I mean the tone from the guitar and amplifier AND his playing! Can't help but be influenced by a legend, really. I never heard of this singer , but he sort of reminds me of Phil Lynott. sings good. So, what year is Robin's strat? Obviously not older than late 1968, unless he changed the neck...

The first concert I ever saw was Johnny Winters at the Boston Tea Party. I must of been about 17. He played so great. Totally cemented the blues in me. Terrific slide. They played Jeff Beck music before and after the show like a tribute, I think that Jeff had just had a terrible car accident or something. The following year I went to see Muddy in a little club on Boylston St. Fred McDowell the same year. Long Live The Blues. This is an amazing recording. Thank you so much for posting it.

After doing a great deal of research about Johnny Winter's early days, I learned that this performance is actually during the early morning hours of August 9, 1970. Johnny appeared onstage with Luther Allison at the Ann Arbor Blues Fest the afternoon before. Pictures of that set exist and are out there on the web. Yee has a great site devoted to JW and you will definitely find one there in the 1970 timeline, though his dates are sometimes off a bit, too. Johnny was the best then.

That's Randy Jo Hobbs! He was a great bass player. Rick Derringer is on record saying that Randy was one of the best. Unfortunately, his heroin habbit did him in. It got to the point where he couldn't play anymore. This clp was during the Johnny Winter And days....the "AND" were the McCoy's from 'Hang on Sloopy' fame. So ya, Randy may not have known all the blues tunes , but Johnny kept him for a lot years so that says something right there. Even Tommy Shannon didn't last that long with him.

Clap an ear on some early Procol Harum. The band Robin was with in the 60s before he went out on his own. Before he traded his Gibson for the Fender. Then you'll hear a little bit more between the Hendrix flashes. There's more to him than you think. Listen to one called `Whiskey Train` off of Procol Harum's `Home` CD. That's a good place to start.

I was at this concert! Golden Earring opened and Trower split the bill with Sha-Na-Na. Trower was unbelievable, had the entire hall at winterland in awe, then came Sha-Na-Na (oops!!) That was a mistake Bill Graham made! It was the only time I saw the lights go on inside Winterland and clould see what it looked like almost empty. Nobody stayed for Sha-Na-Na!!! They should have opened the show!

Hey Folks, I have a great (cassette) audio tape of MTH from "In Concert" that I still play every once in a while. I recorded it off of WPLR in New Haven. Remember that ABC simulcast the show so one could crank it at home? Of course this was long before stereo signals being broadcast over TV audio or the Betamax. I also have MTH from a WPLR broadcast from Toad's Place in New Haven. Good stuff, plus Ian dropped the "effen" bomb, too. Music was so much fun back then, wasn't it? Be well.

I think the Midnight Special DVD series would have been better if it had been divided up into genres of music. But I suppose they wouldn't sell as many DVDs that way. A Mott The Hoople DVD with complete performances is being planned, along with a strong possibility of a reunion.

Do you know what song(s) they did on Midnight Special? I would imagine it's "...Memphis" and ?. It's too bad that the format of the Midnight Special DVDs is so rigid. T. Rex also played "Hot Love", Stories did "Top Of The City" (a power pop rocker totally unlike "Brother Louie") and The Hollies did "Magic Woman Touch". Would love to see those and more.

Who knows, with Juno and Life on Mars making noise for our band, the producers might have a change of heart. I WAS told by an operator about six months ago that they Have no plans at this time to include the MTH performance... so that does imply a possible change of mind. All that said, we know that we are a minority of the buying public and fans of other good acts are just as disappointed as we are that their band didnt make the cut either.

I stopped at seven DVDs, complete with the acts you mentioned (except the NY Dolls-didnt know about that one!) and performances by Aerosmith, Bowie, The Cars, AC/DC, Rod Stewart, Al Green, & Kiss (doing Black Diamond, no less!). Yeah, its definitely not a rip-off, its just missing the crown jewel as far as Im concerned. And like you say, with the benefit of hindsight, the producer of this series has to know what an influence MTH has been on rock since their heyday. (continued)

Yes I am certain you are right. That Midnight Special series is disappointing. Nearly everything on it has to be a Top 10 single or else it's not eligible. The one glaring exception is The New York Dolls. They are on there, but no Mott The Hoople, who clearly were just as influential as NYDs. But the series isn't totally worthless. I bought and kept some of them. T. Rex, Argent, The Hollies, and Todd Rundgren are on there, all of interest to me.

moorlock2003, I have a distinct memory of Mott The Hoople doing Midnight Special (99% sure that it was not In Concert). A black soul group was hosting the show and the singer introduced MTH with quite a flourish before they tore into "Memphis". The recent Midnight Special DVD series has no plans to release that performance-I cancelled my subscription, it was the only reason I started buying them.

interesting.. thats's the kind of combination that heifetz used only tht the wound G was Tricolore instead of Eudoxa. however milstein used the combination of wound G&D Eudoxa with plain gut and Goldbrokat E. although i never got to use the Tricolore myself(for the company now is out of business)i think Eudoxa is a better choice for wound gut strings. for the ones who tried or use it will agree tht it jus jus adds incredible beauty to the sound

He use to come to Eugene when I was in college at the UofO in the middle 80's. I saw him several times at a local Blues bar where I worked part time, and had a chance one night to sit with him after one show and have a bite to eat. Your right, he's one of the most decent, nice guys you'd ever want to meet. Very approachable, for being a "star", and not all hung up about just hanging out and being "one of the guys".

One of the reasons that alot of people don't know Trower is that he has focussed on his craft and not stardom. He doesn't wear and did never wear any fancy clothing/"uniform" or hat like Hendrix, SRV, and alot of others. Plus the guy is very soft spoken and humble with no big ego. Apparently, stardom requires a big ego or some other such BS. Jeez, even Rolling Stone doesn't include Trower in their 100 greatest guitarists list. But who cares? His fans know he is one of the alltime greats!

Thanks!!! Trower has always (aside from Jimi...of course!) been a main influence on my guitar playing. He has an uncanny/unequalled sense of taste, phrasing, and (O.M.G.!!!) his untoppable VIBRATO!!! I have been lucky enough to meet him and have him sign 3 of my Stratocaster tremolo covers. I have one proudly on one of my main guitars!

Thanks so much - good quality (esp. audio). One of the greatest bands of the 60's. Of course, Beatles were number 1 - but in my opinion - the other 4 of the top 5 Classic 60's Bands included: Jimi Hendrix Experience, The Doors, Jefferson Airplane and Spirit ! It was SPIRIT'S manager, so I attended a few shows, did some pub. photos, the cover of there new line-up/CD. I saw him in 1976 at Red Rocks in Morrison, Colorado with the CSO. Although this was years BEFORE I ever did LSD, I began to hallucinate as he played. The rocks behind the stage began to swim and swirl into shapes of various animals and so on. I wasn't too worried, I figured it was some sort of reaction to the greatest music I had ever heard on this planet. Eugene Fodor is incredible. How I wish there was some video of him playing Prokofiev's March for the Love of Three Oranges.

We(the orchestra) accompained him on both Mozart and Tchaikovsky's concertos back in 1996 in Venezuela and he was abslutetly awesome and IM sure he still is.
