I'm a much better bassist than guitarist (only occasionally played rhythm guitar in the bands I played in) so I don't dream of owning many guitars. But I agree about the Rickenbacker played by Marty. Of course my holy grail as far as guitars go is the cherry-sunburst Rickenbacker Tom Petty is sporting on the cover of Damn The Torpedoes. I would hang that on my wall and just stare at it.

I also played one, pretty close to Kilbey's in this video but with one pickup and a shorter scale I believe. I agree with you - excellent tone but slightly uncomfortable. Maybe that explains why the Coronado guitars and basses are still some of the most affordable vintage Fenders. By the way, I would kill for MWP's Rick in this video. Or in any video, I don't care which one.

Damn Straight! KROQ 106.7 allowed many, many of my generation to hear this and so many other great tunes. No better station during the 80's!! Rodney Bingenheimer, Swedish Egil, Richard Blades, even Poorman. God, how I wish for those days again. At least Egil and Blades are on Sirius Satellite now. Most music today couldn't hold a candle to 80's tunes... not even the sucky ones!!! LOL

If you liked Metropolis you'll love most of their back catalogue, specifically Reptile, Under The Milky Way, Columbus . . . Once you've travelled this path you'll want to explore a few other bands from the same era . . . The Triffids, the Go Betweens and the Ups and Downs. Peace, Love and Paisley.

Well, it's been a year since someone has expressed their admiration for what is a fantastic song... I love this but must admit I do love doing a bit of air guitar to "Blaze of Glory" (Go The Power Ballad !!) so have to disagree with Kelly - everyone who loves Bon Jovi will definitely love them and remember them in 25 years just as I still love The Church 25 years later...music tastes are subjective...

Love the chimes and slow building interludes that explode into tight, dramatic verses. Steve Kilbey wasn't Michael Hutchence, and The Church weren't nearly as marketable as INXS; but for mine they had similar musical tlaent.

Heyday was one of the best albums of the 80s. Kilbey was at times arrogant about his gifts as a songwriter, but they were a good band! It doesn't hurt that they were some of the foxiest guys in alternative music, and Brad from Hoodoo Gurus, too. Australian alternative rock in the 80s was terrific stuff.--Ms. Pogle

Fantastic clip, they were such a stunningly brilliant band at that time. What an incredible performance if it wasn't for the ad-libs they could be playing the record. I saw them in Sheffield UK around this time, a half empty room but never to be forgotten one of the best gigs ever!

Must have seen these guys half a dozen times in Brissy in the 1980s. One particularly memorable show at the old Roxy in the Valley. The head of steam they got up with their incredibly LOUD wall of sound was just fantastic - especially when you had help from chemical substances. Long live The Church - one of Australia's greatest bands!

Saw them on the seance tour at the old her majesty's theatre in brisbane,early eighties.They played at that venue because there was no alchohol,they wanted the audiance to listen to the music with no distractions.Great song,great album.

What a song! And album too. Saw them in 1986 opening for Echo & the Bunnymen at theatre St-Denis in Montreal (probably one of the best show i saw). They opened with Myrrh (my greatest Church's song), i was conquered. They played Unguarded moments, a tune that i heard a couple of times on the radio, but i didn't know it was one of theirs and which i really liked. Great moments. Thank you guys!

I couldn't agree with you more. Heydey is one of my Top 5 all-time albums. I saw 'em in '85 when the opened for Echo and the Bunnymen at the State Theater in Detroit. They were touring in support of Heyday. So damn good! I just listened to this album on my way to work this morning--I hadn't heard it in a few years. I actually wept during some parts. Silly, I know. But true.... :)

Thanks for posting this! I have been waiting eagerly for it. Heyday was a brilliant album: one of the best of its decade or any for that matter. As a girl in NorCal I listened to The Church on alt radio and then bought their records. I loved seeing them live in the late 80s. Steve Kilbey had intellectual lyrics and sultry if a bit jaded vocals so my sis and I were hooked.

Fantastic!! I saw Steve and Marty doing an aucoustic set back in the 90´s in a small venue in Sweden. They rocked even more without their rythm section and could really do justice to the vocal harmonies they laid down on their albums. Did they really smoke all that weed?
