He doesn't need hundreds of notes like so many other Blues guitar players. B.B. King called Peter the best white Bluesman ever, and that should mean something I guess. It was the drama and inuendo that popularized the band and made them very rich while at the same time changing their message and the persona. Even I liked warm ways, well for awhile, but the band was never the same after Stevie. You're right. The early FMac stuff was really outstanding. Same with the early Genesis stuff. to begin with, I'm neither English, nor a Scot, but if you check wikipedia (or just listen to the song with all your heart :) you'll see that he (along with The Wings' band-mate Denny Laine) wrote a song about a place he's got a sincere love for. that perhaps implies that the Brits who helped made this such a hit have felt the same affection for their coutry - you could say that Paul struck the right chord with it, both musically and sentimentally :)

It's quite ridiculous, it's still the biggest selling non-charity single (Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody sold more but the proceeds went to charity). I don't think anyone knows why it was so unexpectedly successful, and no it doesn't have any special meaning, especially for Scottish people.
