I think it's probably more folk than trad... trad's more instrumental reels, jigs and hornpipes. If you really like Irish trad stuff check out Paul Brady or The Dubliners- I'd argue that they're the best folk musicians we've ever had :-)

Songs such as "Fields of Athenry" are a living history of past events. While some musicians, like Luke Kelly, used his music and fame to promote workers rights. Other examples: Bob Dylan and civil rights, Ralph McTell and poverty, Johnny Cash and prison conditions just to name a few. There is more to the music than you think

I don't remember giving it a thumbs down, but i'm not a big fan of folk music anyway, I think that folk music sucks no matter where you are from, I don't think it's professional or cool that you sing drunk and act drunk on stage... like Bono. Looks like that's a "Yes" - as lately as September in Vienna, they have also been to France and Denmark this year(2008). looks like, apart from an obvious break for a certain Funeral in Greystones, Co Wicklow, that Barney and John are still going strong ("Lord Love em"). Together with Sean, Eamonn, and most recently Patsy they are doing what I'm sure is in their blood. -RIP Ronnie, the King's dead but his music like his memory lives on! No,the asturien gaita has not exactly the same fingerings as the higlands but some fingers positions are the same: Si=low G;Do=low A;Re=B;Sol=E;La=F;Sib=High G.The other positions,Mi,Fa,Do(sharp) are different than C,D and high A.The asturian pipes has a midle second octave,re mi fa.The highland pipes has not.I play both of them.

No, there are a lot of kinds of gaita around the world, in spain there are several kinds, this is the asturian pipe, the fingerings are "closed", the highland pipes use "semi-closed" fingerings, you play with the righ hand as opened fingerings and with the left hand as closed fingerings. There's other spanish pipe, the galician pipe that uses opened fingerings. Search by the web, you'll see fingerings charts by "tabla digitación asturiana" or "tabla digitación gallega" for asturian and galician
