The guy playing violin and the long guitar solo here is now the violin player! The lead singer left and came back!The guitar player with the eyepatch has been with the band the whole time! The bass player was in a band with the lead singer and came with him when he came back!

Kansas was and is a great band who deserves respect and admiration and I doubt anyone here would dispute that. This was one of Kerry's gems and Steve did a stellar job both on the studio version as well as the live version found on "Two for the show". but lets be honest that this version isn't as good as either of those - for whatever reason(s), which might inclide road fatigue, alcohol abuse, or just plain boredom. But I'm still willing to respect the group for their hard work since day 1.

Yeah, & I mean - we disagree on whether this was good vocally, I like it.You don't. Further, "kick ass" to one person is different to one person than it is to the next. This performance was the best musically I have ever seen from Kansas since the Kirshner shows back in '74 and '75! The only problem was Walshs vocals! Mr. Belfry, The performances I spoke of were not carefully selected or in lower ranges! From 1974-1981 Walsh on his worst day after punishing, grueling touring could blow away most singers!From 1982-1986 with his other projects he continued to kick ass! From 1986-1990 he resumed his ass kicking with Kansas! It was around then that he started to show an alarming loss of weight and his voice went downhill! He got better but was never the same after that! He is again a fitness nut but his voice????

I guess I just think it sounds unappreciative to say things which,at least, come across belittling about these guys. It's good that people have ideas and opinions.I just would get more out of opinions if stated in a different way, like "while this has its merits, I also like this other performance by them..." or whatever. Besides, Kansas, or Walsh, have nothing to apologize for here.This, as are practically all their performances, good on various levels. Art from a different era, shouldn't be judged like some karaoke contest from an era which is either flat out less creative, or, at least, where less imaginative things are being chosen to be promoted in public entertainment venues. These guys pour their hearts out,& under hot stage lights,not easy-drugs or no. Advocating sobriety with a civil manner is also good.

Final thought to Rickyon (who I feel does have some good observations about commenting trends in general) I'll bet that some of the performances you speak of in recent years where you site "better vocalizing" by comparison, are them playing more carefully selected tunes, in lower ranges. I think part of the charm of these things from long grueling tours is to see some of the gravely-ness, and heart to go on in spite of it,I mean at some point in Joe Cocker's career he went with that,& it works!

I see, then I guess we disagree on the one point,you see-the songs that they could get away with effortlessly at age 25 or 30 (& think of how creative they were to come up with them at that age, that in itself is amazing) are no longer easy to do, after the voice gets banged up, I doubt if Walsh does more drugs than lots have, I think the facial things are more out of theatrics to make the performance interesting, so that the feeling gets conveyed regardless of how tip top shape the voice is in.

You can't discount the toll drugs take on the health and voice of a lead singer! It seems you're trying to imply that Walsh is only having a bad night here from a grueling tour schedule or his age(Which at the time was 41)! It's obvious from his emaciated body, the glassy look in his eyes and the mistakes in his playing that he is blasted here! No ifs' ands or buts! Final thought, I just dig that it's on here. I like even the strange showmanship, which, as I've stated, is part of the act. The musicianship is top notch. Also, voices aren't machines. Any performance has peaks and valleys. I, personally, find film of the classic rock tunes a tad bit inspiring as an artist. So you nay-sayers, just go out & create something which stands up to it, both the style of performances by the artists, & the song itself, and know that the two aren't completely separable.

I meant to write on earlier comment, that for some people to try and pick apart, critize & dissect every element in an effort chase after the elusive ultimate insulting comment type of thing, to me, shows an element of jealousy. I mean to even insult the phrasing & antics in a live performance, when the guy of subject, is one of the guys who came up with these songs, I would think he has a vision of how he wants it conveyed and the way he can best fit in phrasing around volume of band and so on.

I think plenty of emotion comes across, here. Despite what former commentor writes. The lyric writing, sound and work ethic of the band is respectable. Every artist has some turmoils, they've even had inner-turmoils between the band members. But I think this was good on all levels-spirit and musical resonance. And bear in mind that the amount of years these guys have performed takes a toll on singer's voices, on nights when you're hoarse, you reach for some little different thing to dazzle 'em.

I saw one time one of Rich's strings broke on his guitar right in the middle of a riff, so you see him hustle over to the acoustic guitar and play the rest of it, while they where fixing the string. It was cool since Steve started playing with him to try and cover it up a bit, amazing they can adapt that fast to any given situation. I lost track of them after Leftoverture, mainly because I was listening to a lot of Mahavishnu Orchestra, Jean Luc Ponty and Allan Holdsworth. I love the guitars on that album, especially Magnum Opus. All I was exposed to after that were the occassional eMpTyV vid and some radio. Can you tell me the name of a few songs I missed out on? Pop?? Really?? The only Kansas that you could remotely call pop was on the "Point of Know Return" album!! Even then it was only a couple of songs! When do you think they went "pop"? Kansas but out (and still does!) a whole shitload of great material since this album! They've released at least 20 albums since then (if you count the box sets, live recordings and symphonic recordings!)! I highly recommend that check some of that stuff out!

Second only to the Beatles, and by far the MOST UNDERRATED BAND in the history of music. Oh, Michael, come out of retirement and speak to us again! Yikes! Thank God he cleaned his act up and is still kicking ass 16 years later! The "bushy haired violinist" left the band came back for 9 years and left the band again in 2006!He was looking a little worn out at the end and I hope he's getting a well deserved rest! Damn, the fairy dust must have kicked in big time during this song, Walsh looks like his eyes were going to pop out of his head. The tweakin, the compulsive head/hair flipping, the "flashdance" moves.. very out of place for one of Kansas' most beautiful and reverent songs.

I thank you very much for this posting. Leftoverture was not only one of the definitive American albums of the '70s, it was also one of the albums of my youth. This is one if its greatest cuts. I saw Kansas so many years ago and this brought back the memory of the arena and the moment. Again, thanks.
