Oh god, my wrist tremolo is in a mess... Many people say that J. Du Pre is less technically sound than Yo Yo Ma, but this isn't true. They're pretty much equals. J Du Pre can break so many "rules" (Hand position shifting? Oh who cares, just use the best finger for the note!) while making such great sound!

Thank you markvogue. A great deal is always said about Du Pre's passion, and all of it true, though sometimes mixed up with the fact that she was very beautiful in an unaffected way - there is a smile at the end of an earlier movement which is absolutely stunning. And there are always the Plath-fiend types wanting a new pet victim. But all this ignores her musical intelligence, her musicality, and the happy chance the Elgar wrote a piece just perfect for those.

Yes, I absolutely agree! Brilliant music and soloist. Also worth mentioning is C.M. Giulini with the Wiener Philharmoniker - playing a live performance of Brukner's unfinished Ninth in Vienna. There is something about live performances, isn't there? Although there is no soloist in this piece, I believe the conductor and orcherstra transcends the medium and gives us a glimpse of Bruckner's inner soul in his final days. So powerful and moving. It's available on Deutsche Grammophon 427 345-2.
