From 1:26 to the end is probably one of my favorite bit technically and auditorily for the cello. The across-string technique makes it sound like there are two cello's playing the piece and it all culminates with the end of the rising phrase with a glorious finale.

She has a very beautiful voice for other kind of music. She is great, for example, when singing spanish medieval songs. But I agree with you in saying that her performance in this opera is wrong. Every musical sentence is not conected with the next one.

¿puedes explicarme por qué? Es obvio que existen interpretaciones mucho mejores. La versión de Ensemble Elyma dirigida por Gabriel Garrido es excelente (se llevó el diapasón de oro del año 1997) La versión de René Jacobs no me gusta, pero es mucho mejor que esta de Jordi Savall. La versión de Harnoncourt, aunque es muy antigua, todavía sigue siendo muy buena, y es definitivamente mejor que ésta. Por favor, dame argumentos que demuestren que no tengo razón.

The first Peri/Corsi opera, "Dafne", as I said, is lost except for a few small excerpts. I have, however, seen facsimiles of both the "Euridice" original scores from 1600 (Peri and Caccini), and have heard recordings of both in their entirety. Having studied all three scores, this is the first "good" opera, but definitely not the first opera. Most people who call this the first opera have read their material from inaccurate or outdated sources with little to no academic credibility.

It indeed is performed in 1607 for the first time, and indeed isn't the first opera. But, on the other hand, the other 3 opera's of Peri are (almost) completely lost, and haven't been performed in ages. That's why in general this opera is called the first official opera.. So I think SimianHeretic isn't quite wrong here.

You are quite wrong on 2 things here. 1: This opera was first performed in February 1607, published in 1609 and 1615. 2: It is not the first opera. The first opera was Jacopo Peri's "Dafne", performed in 1598. Most of that opera is missing. That opera was followed by two settings of Rinuccini's Euridice, both composed in 1600 by Jacopo Peri and Giulio Caccini.

Ha! This is too funny - what a tirade of commentators. I think the musicians here should just shut-up and let people enjoy her singing ;-) In all other respects this is an absolutely fabulous production -- the orchestral accomp impeccable... I just wish Monserrat was a bit more in tune that day (believe me, I've had my days too). IMHO, Lynne Dawson does a much better job of this.

In her defense, she does some very nice affectation at one point, singing a bit low on pitch to great effect just before a cadence. But I think bebopnazi is commenting on her somewhat warbley and generally sharp pitch, especially on higher, sustained notes (5:50 especially). Most singers (and violinists) play quite out of tune -- but the vibrato covers it up. But vibrato as generally isn't allowed here (except for affect) for stylistic/historic reasons, making her job especially difficult.

I love the beginning solo trumpet part which is at 0:36 seconds, which is rising for a exultant response from the audience and the heavens. And it gets that I believe in the mirror of the singing heard in the choir like wings wafting the rising and the falling of the voices like a wave dangerous and caresing us.

thank you for posting - Gardiner & the Monteverdi Ensemble deserve more credit for their crisp and authentic performances- and it is good to actually SEE the period instruments also, esp the natural (baroque) trumpets. I cant imagine what it is like to play without valves...

I'm going to do this piece in December and it's really hard. Those runs are very difficult it made my solos in Vadaldi's Gloria and Hyden Creation seem like I was singing Twinkle, Twinkle littel Star and I founf them difficult. The second solo she does I can do in my sleep but that's because I have going over it time and again for the past year

I sing with a symphony chorus and do solo work all over. She is pretty good. Definately heard much worse. Until you can do this, keep your negatives to yourself.

AnimaeGirl...don't give up. I've been a classical vocalist, a singer for more than 50 years. You CAN do it. This girl is VERY good at the coloratura sections. They are clean. If you've never sung this, it is very difficult. Fun, but hard.

No offence, but Rostropovich was practically god when it comes to the cello, so a comment of "This guy is amazing", really doesn't say it. Oh and yes, he was Russian, but he left Russia in 1974 and was practicaly exiled after that until the mid-nineties. Honestly, the dude is probably the best cellist ever recorded - try Brahms Cello Sonata Number 1, E minor

In my opinion, Kishori is not second to Kesarbai --if you read Kishori's biography (Ganasaraswati) you will get the idea--she has studied 'Rigveda' and much more to understand music. Kesarbai was definitely very powerful in those days and was technically rich (in terms of music knowledge) but she lacked just a little bit in 'bhava' what mogubai had and Kishori does as well (in my opinion) I will try to post her Bibhas on youtube.

OMG! 4:45 Barbara is like an angel just floating up to the high note! ugh! i wish there was a recording that matched this calibur. i have dessay, damrau, and a few others singing this, but none can match Barbara on this part. I remember seeing her, Dawn Upshaw,( Dawn was Echo, but I don't remember the other two characters' names) and Gwyenth Bean as supporting singers in Jessye Norman's "Ariadne auf Naxos" at the Met in the early "90's. I heard her sing this at Covent Garden. Jon Vickers was magnificent and touching as the blinded Samson. Then, after his body was borne in at the end, to the Dead March from Saul, Joan stepped forward from the crowd and blew us all away with her stunning, joyful singing, right up to the amazing top D. Unforgettable! And a couple of months later came her great first Lucia. Thank you so much for posting

Joan Sutherland made her American debut (1963) at Winthrop University. She was accompanied on a concert grand by her husband. As a voice major, I had the amazing privilege of sitting in a workshop, seminar. I also heard her just before she retired, as she performed at Music Hall with the Cincinnati Orchestra. You think that she's amazing on YouTube, you should have heard her in person. A truly amazing singer!

Dame Joan Sutherland would have to be my favourite singer! Every piece she sings, she makes it sound soo easy! I am singing this piece too, at a concert too, and in an exam soon. I dont know whether I am going to be singing up to a D though! I think I am more a dramatic soprano, the A is enough for me all the way through this piece... She is so amazing, an inspiration to me and my singing

it's amazing such a powerful voice could be so agile. but she's so powerful it almost makes the piece too serious. She does a lovely job, but her beautiful dark color (for a coloratura at least) is ment to be strong and riveting as opposed to the light, sweet, and almost playful sound that sounds best for this piece. Still, it's a great interpretation in it's own right.

There is a live performance of this and the high D at the end is very dark with an almost brazen ring. I mean really like Callas but without the wobble, the vibrato is perfect. This is a lesson on breath control. Furthermore, this is a testament to the highest level of technical mastery the human voice can ever achieve.

As it is, for a lyric soprano, this piece is not that difficult, if not for the intricate fioritura. The overall tessitura is friendly to a lyric voice but not at all to a dramatic soprano. Then we add the coloratura and any other dramatic soprano who attempts this hellish piece will probably end up spitting out one of her lungs. This is way high for your typical dramatic soprano but listen to what Dame Joan does to this.

Absolutely STUNNING performance! Forget presumed protocol. Bach would have WANTED us to embelish it just as John Eliot has done. AndyHirt is right: "this music was supposed to be embelished". Eklund's trumpet - SUPERB! Dietrich Henschel - THE BEST! There is nothing offensive to me about this piece as performed. One need not comment on perfection! But I will anyway. Beautifully played and sung! I have never heard a baroque trumpet played any better. Good tempo, not too slow or fast. Great bass singer! Makes me feel that I've lived a life wasted. Musical talent and no access to display it or enjoy it. Thanks for this video. It helps me realize that there's hope yet.

I think sigmaclass should tell his/her teacher that they know nothing about baroque music. it was the practice to add ornamentation, it makes the piece more interesting.

There is a great lack of understanding in these comments. If you read the Altenberg, Bendenelli, Fantini, Smithers, Tarr, etc., you will find that this music was supposed to be embellished. Classical music was a reaction to this and simplified out all of the improvised ornaments. Although Eklund didn't "huff" and use alternate tonguings, he did an exceptional job. Gardner can be slightly faulted because the embellishments were not done on-the-spot, but decided before-hand.

When any of you - ANY OF YOU - can masterize baroque trumpet to that level and have the chance and the musical strengh to approach Gardiner closer than a mile away and play music for him, maybe then you may make a thoughtful respectful comment. Until then, practice. Envy and pride is most trumpeter's biggest ptoblems; you know this is an exceptionnal interpretaiton, just admit it and live with it! Peace and music unto you all;)

I find Eklund's trumpet playing perfectly appropriate. He is nimble, in tune and his playing brings freshness to the piece. Some more scholarly people might argue that Bach never left room for much improvisation since his ornamentations are well-known and categorized nowadays, but this is still a ways away from an improvisational jam session on the natural trumpet! My 2 cents: well done.

i dont really understand what you are talking about either.... the only thing he does differently at the end from his previous ornaments is the scale. a scale makes it sound like a children's song? i'm no period music specialist but it definitely didn't stick out as ruinous to me. its a virtuoso trumpet part so i don't think a little flair is vulgar- in fact it seems called for. specifically what do you find so offensive?

Yes I mean the final part. I am also aware of the practice of improvisation in the baroque era, but... all kinds of alterations of music (trills, improvisations etc.) must change the music to the better. Not to the worse. That goes for the baroque era as well as for today. Eklund's last passage makes this piece sound like a children's song. So Eklund: next time, please figure out a better ending.
