I was lucky enough to be at this gig, and it was unbelievable. For me Gary is the best "all round" guitar player ever...he can play all styles. For people saying SRVs abetter guitar player, hendrix, vai whoever. Yes no question that their great players (in their field), But Gary can do the f*ckin lot! I agree and all, but picks provide a major contribution to your sound; It's just stupid to get completely picky about them (don't overthink it), but don't underestimate how a choice of pick affects your sound. I know your probably aware of this, but for anybody reading, a player needs to be aware of all the variables contributing to their sound... sorry, I'm preaching lol, just good things to think about

yeah but the lightness or heaviness can make it easier or harder to play depending on the person. Like I use super light picks, for some reason the flexibility makes it much easy to play the strings without mistakes.

I love Wengie but I think he has a lot of trouble playing his stuff slow. Paul Gilbert is actually a teacher so he is always playing his stuff slow. Wengie on the other hand probably hasn't played his signature shreds slow since the mid 1980s. Probably also he figures that only advanced guitarists are going to bother with trying to learn his stuff anyway. I like it because it crams more onto the tape.

Dimebag was one of the greatest, but not because of his technical ability, I think we would all agree that Alexi Laiho, Satriani and yngwie are overall better guitarists then dimebag, but Dime had his own sound and had the riffs that are what make him a legend. Its not the solos people remember as is the case with the others, its his riffs.

Of course slash doesn't know shit. haha hes a good song writer but when it comes to theory you would be correct. Just like Dimebag Darrell. Dimebag admitted in an interview he couldn't tell you anything he knew a couple of penetanic positions but that was it. I personally am the same way I have never been able to sit down and learn theory I just do my best to write and play everyhting by hear. Im sure many of the things I do are part of a scale but I couldn't tell you which one.

Went to Musicians Institute and saw him live twice. He sucks. My guitar teacher there took lessons from him long ago, and when he was 20 he could out shred Lynch. He is sloppy and mostly out of key, doesn't know a damn thing or interested in theory, and is a grade A asshole. He has the same tricks he recycles. Kids shred the shit out of him.

I like Holdsworth, a little to Fusiony for my taste, but Lynch has a certain sound about his Legato teqnique...Lyche has very Magical fingers, he gets such phrashing just from his Legato, it just sounds more fluid and snappy than Holdsworth, Holdsworth is Morelike a Satriani Legato stlye, Lyche stlye is more sheer Brute Force, when he plays it like he is saying F..k you motherbasterts.. stick this scale up ypur ass..

Not fit for jazz? Are you serious? You're complaining about him sounding the same all the time and you want him to do what? Play with an archtop? Get the "jazz sound"? I respect your opinion on his playing (even though I disagree), but giving relevance to instrument choice in jazz (when it comes to electric guitars anyway) is pretty narrow minded. Also if you think Mike Stern doesn't have a "rich harmonic language" you need to get a clue. Find Pat Metheny someday and ask him what he thinks.

I've always enjoyed Mike's style, he manages to combine blues, jazz and funk in a really smooth way. Some might say that his solos sound quite similar to each other, but I don't mind, I could listen to these kind of lines for all eternity :)

I totally agree. When you attend a show, this is what you hear all the time; no change in the sound palette, monotonous. You get bored very fast. I hate chorus except for special 80's top 40 sound (Police). The only guitar player I like using the same sound all the time are the ones who have an harmonically very rich language like Tal Farlow, Kessel, Joe Pass for ex. I don't understand this fascination for a Telecaster. IMHO , unfit for jazz .
