yeah, that was the theme of the episode. Hence why they have Ted's band singing Wizard of Oz songs through out the episode.

Damn I won't lie...I just about cried like a baby at the end of the episode. It was so sad and so beautiful at the same time. That line earlier on in the show (paraphrasing here) "You want to take my son off life support so you can use his heart...and you don't even know his name..." That hit me hard too.

I love Ted's voice, he really got to let it out in this one, compared to commercials or you know, Underdog.
