I agree. So many of my friends and family don't understand why I like it so much. They say it has no plot. But there's something in it that feels so incredibly heart wrenching you know? The visuals, music and script along with the actors are all in sink and it really paints that picture of meeting someone and even though you know you'll never meet again just knowing that for someone reason that person made an imprint on you. Its not for everyone, but the artist in me really loves it.

I though this was kind of juvenile, most because of the poor acting, though the storyline was a let-down as well; romanticising childish feminism or 'girl power'. Coppola made an incredible leap from this to The Virgin Suicides, which is admirable.

Marie Antoinette did die, because of the French Revolution. But in the movie they do not show it, or any part of Marie Antoinette's life when she was is the Bastille (the French prison). The movie chose to show the young girl, who became the glamorous queen of France and lived life as she wanted to. It was a very good movie (even though many disagree)and I think you'll enjoy it.

Louis faile to act when he had been given mny opportunities. His involvement with the American War of Independance was one of many factors that caused France's bankruptcy in 1789. Also his parlement, who represented the 1st and 2nd Estates, were denying any laws he tried to make as an act of royal disobediance. Louis XVI's finacial mister Brienne nearly prevented the Revolution but Louis got impatient and messed it up causing the people to believe he had lost his benevolance and they revolted.

I did some research because I was a little ignorant about what did happen to the children. You're right, the son died of pneumonia secondary to his poor living conditions in prison. They actually kept him in a cell directly beneath Marie Antoinette's so she could hear him cry and cough himself to death. However, little Marie Therese lived to be an old woman, married and had children.

Because the peasants were betraying their King of and Queen. And was it nessacary to kill children? The revolutionaries were hardly hero's, they were monsters who then went on to ravage Europe. The Monarchy had been perfectly fine. It needed reform, yes, but that's what Louis XVI was trying to do. I expected so much from this film, I expected a great modern movie set in the wonderfully interesting period that was regency. However I felt it moved far too slow, Sofia seems to dedicate more to the sumptious cinematography (excellent) than she does on story or mood, leaving it floundering until the audience couldnt care less. I think this movie was amazing. And it wasn't about being accurate, it was about releasing the truth about Marie Antoinette, not about if it was necessarily accurate. She was and still is portrayed as a frivolous queen, and Sofia Coppola did a wonderful job of unmasking that, showing she was a young teenage girl put into a different situation. Kirsten Dunst was amazing, oh and this vid. is really annoying because there's that French voice in the background.

I like Red Edmund's cover of Walt Mink's Miss Happiness. The singers are VERY similar. And, oddly enough the vocal sound quality on both artists versions are kind of crappy. But I think Red Edmund's guitarist is really good and his falsetto is brilliant (on their album). Walt Mink is a rare gem though. So great.

This was from when John was still smoking pot. The slinkiness and interwovenness of the riffing, ahh, he ditched that later when what would sound like espresso became his drug of choice. Also their first drummer had far deeper and spacier groove than the later ones. This is of course pure speculation.

Nice video, very SC with the shots the film style and all that. A product of a once happy pairing (SC and Spike Jonze). Very 90's too. Good find, thanks for putting it up. Shame about the quality though, but what can you do. Least we get to see it.

Great costumes, excellent actors--and then add Sofia Coppola to the mix and it turns into a turkey! One director (can't remember whom) said Sofia shouldn't be let anywhere near a film studio. Still, worth seeing just for the beauty and decadence that was the France of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette.
