i can see that ^_^ but I'm Scottish. Imo, some broadcasting companies and stuff (particularly the BBC) has blurred the line between the different national comedies within the UK and Ireland beyond that of which people non-Scots, Irish, English, welsh, etc. can tell. although some comedies (I'll say Still Game or Chewin' the Fat) still maintain a national sense of comedy to a country outside England.

That may be the case in the US, but in the Repbulic of Ireland the Irish do not consider Irish people or Irish comedy to be British. These mean very different things. See what happens if you tell an Irisman that he's British (or tell a Scotsman that he's English....). I must admit that in N.Ireland the situation is a bit more complicated.

When people refer to British Comedy, they usually mean comedic stylings from the geographical Britannic Isles, not the political union of the United Kingdom. Incidentally, he was also a bigot, but he expressed his bigotism in a way to make everyone laugh because it was very subtle, rather than the kind where people get up in arms about it being racist. He probably just enjoyed saying the word 'curry' in a dalek voice, and then called them Paistani Daleks to give it a reference. Serious answer to the "why is everyone labeled?" question - the BBC wardrobe department had a system in the seventies for labelling costumes with the performer's name and the name of the show. There was such paranoia among performers about going in front of the cameras with a label visible, Spike had the idea of leaving the labels on as an inside joke that became a running joke. In other shows, everyone has a bandaged finger, a coldsore, a beauty spot or something like that.

This is one of my all time favourites. It's from the Q series. Haven't seen it for 30 years! Do you have the rest? There are two sub tribes to come: The Micks (you've guessed it - Irish workmen) and the Pak-es-ta-nees a sub tribe that take care of the buses. The buses incidentally are hunted by the Cock a Knees who meet at the tribal totem (a bus stop) to hunt them. The buses are so afraid that they never show up alone but always in herds. All hilarious stuff - Spike at his best!

Of course Spike was Irish - just like half of the famous people in Britain. I think he was a genius, and amazingly inventive, but some of his sketches I just don't really find funny. I mean, yeah, stereotypes are not great, but then again so many modern comedians are much meaner. Speaking of Irish comics, Dylan Moran is also a genius, but I hate his anti-whoever sarcastic viciousness. Paul Merton is excellent, as is Caroline Aherne.. Overall I prefer Billy Connolly whos part Irish.

Read Spike's Book "PUCKOON" published in orange Penguin. Your local library should have it. I have bought it many times only for it to be "borrowed" and never returned. What's so offensive about it? I used to live in Bearsden and when this was first shown there was a headline in the local paper "Too Much of Spike About" and it went on to describe how the Lord Provost didn't approve of it. Religion can't take a joke. But that was the early 1980s. This sketch would not cause the same level of offence now.

Is the lovely lady second from the left the actor David Lodge? He complements Norman Wisdom something awesome in the 1960 film The Bulldog Breed. In fact, if it wasn't for the (still dizzying) bit where Norman is running/falling/hanging off the cliff/and then sprinting off up an upside down David Lodge's beard, then the film would fail. Apart from the psychedelic (Believe) spacecraft slow mo/speed up bit. ps the last bit is, in bits, REALLY mad. Well done Norman, we want you to live forever.
