Although the audio quality sounds like it was recorded on a 1974 portable cassette player pointed at a 1969 cheap transistor radio and then stepped on in the driveway before being 1/2 demagnetized, and the video looks like it was taken off the neighbor's crappy 10" Sanyo Color TV from across the yard through a screen window in a snowstorm, I STILL made myself late for work watching it! THAT'S HOW AWESOME JACO WAS. The other guys ain't too shabby neither! :-)

How can this piece possibly be played ever again after this. They brought every moment to life. Keith gave it so much clarity, and he gave it a soul. To me, whatever was hidden in Stella by Starlight has been revealed. It's like he solved one of the most beautiful musical puzzles ever created. He decoded it and showed us its absolute wonder. I AM listening and what's amazing abt it is, that he makes sounds you may consider noises, but they all fit in musically wether to emphasise the rythm or to fill in the melody in diffrent 'instruments'. You are right in the sense that he's not the best singer out there, but he does have amazing vocal abilities

the vocalisation is a way to help his mind concentrate on the right hand, which usually plays the 'soloing' part, whilst the left hand plays the bass part. it's a way for the mind to keep the focus, even though the two hands are essentially playing two different pieces. even if this wasn't the case, you're certainly in no position to judge what he is over dramatising and what he isn't.

Having seen KJ play in France several times, I can only assume that some of the abusive comments are by people who know little of the work that goes into playing at this level. Would The Trio have stayed together if he was a repugnant as some of the comments suggest? As for the moaning when you see him play live you will realise they occur because he puts his very being into the music. As KJ once said about Miles in an interview, "Miles never forgot the music" and neither does he. Just enjoy!

What Keith does is not following the rhythm of the song so much as creating a rhythm for the sentiment of the song. I like the way he lives in the song and asks no more than "take my hand" so you can live it too. That's jazz as it's supposed to be. Songs or tunes with no time limits or creative ceilings. I'm not a bassist but it would seem to that the Rust In Peace basslines are more than just "one note something's that just follow the drums" Atleast before the songs begin. try and searh "Five Magics Soundcheck" for some intresting Trash Metal basswork =) (Not recommended for people who don't like metal.)

Another factor is syncopation. Jazz and funk require syncopation in the playing which is rhythmically more advanced than Rock. A syncopated line at 100 bpm is more difficult to master than a 200 bpm non syncopated line.

It wasn't until I decided to get into Jazz that I really appreciated how good Jaco was. His playing is way beyond Sheehan and Terenziani and other Rock bassists because besides technique, Jazz requires you to constantly come up with something new, always improvising. It also requires a thorough knowledge of scales and the neck as well as chordal structure and harmonic theory. I have found that this is far beyond anything in Rock and for me at least, is much more difficult to master.

I checked him out. He's obviously a Billy Sheehan disciple but like Sheehan he suffers from the same limitations. His playing is pattern based meaning he plays patterns that he has memorized and practiced until he can play at high speed. The tapping and such is just for show IMO. I used to be a hard Rock/Metal player myself who was influenced by Sheehan and taught my self to play patterns at blinding speed. Anybody can do it with practice.

I advise you to buy his instructional video "Modern Electric Bass". It will teach you a lot. I'm not trying to put you down but at your level you're not at a point where you can accurately judge his greatness. It takes years of playing and studying before the finer points become apparent. It's way beyond simple technique. As for your "scales" comment, all playing is based on scales (including arpeggios). It's what you do within the scales that separates the men from the boys.

By harmonic invention I mean the ability to improvise interesting and melodic lines on the fly. After you've been playing for several more years I believe you will grow to appreciate how great a player he really was. You obviously don't play or know much about bass. He is doing a lot more than playing scales. His harmonic invention was second to none. He was a pioneer on the use of harmonics and playing harmonically advanced solos on the electric bass. He was able to switch from straight walking to Funk at the drop of a hat. He is probably, along with James Jamerson, the most influential and copied electric bassist ever.

That video taught me so much. While he didn't directly address it I got the idea of muting by laying my thumb on the strings. It was hard at first but now it comes more naturally. It's so hard to break old habits.

Actually guiatr101 is right, there is a chorus or flange effect on the bass! I've never heard that done before on an upright, I kinda like it. Personal tastes aside, anyone who's recorded a band off the soundboard knows the effects are much stronger than what is actually coming out of the speakers. P.S. - by the way guitar101, I went to yr page, you've got some killer songs there. Yeah, I'd say you might know a thing or two about playing/recording music.
