What they're doing is trading off, they're playing off each other, which is what makes it amzing. Listen and you'll hear the slight similarities(sp?) between their phrases. Thats what makes it beutiful. They play off each other so well.

I agree with you. It's like 2 people playing 2 different songs. Sounds like rehearsals when everyone is tuning up. I know I'll get thumbs down for this. Jaco is a legend and so is "Toots" but I like when people play either a solo or a song but not two different ones at the same time

no, it's a valid question. Never mind the thumbs down all those jazz professors are giving you. There's a hidden form and a maybe not quite evident beat going on underneath, and that steady ongoing pulse turns the pauses into "music". You know what I mean.

Do you have the "Like Minds" album? It's still Roy Haynes and Metheny, but with the addition of Gary Burton. It's amazing, and was the version I heard before the original Question and Answer recording. It doesn't get any better than Roy Haynes, and put him together with Metheny and it's really something. I saw this trio (Metheny/McBride/Sanchez) last fall, and that was unbelievable too. What a great piece of music.

No, they were a part of Hard bop in 1963, as the movement in jazz already had a strong following with big minds the likes of Lockjaw, Jimmy Smith, Horace Silver, Art Blakey, Cannonball, and even Diz with the Norman Granz All Stars who had all been on the scene years before this. Monk did both predict and precede hard bop with his blues drenched melodies and dirty swing, but he did so almost two decades before this video was made. This video was a victory lap, not the revolution itself.

it can take your whole life to learn how to improvise to the extent these musicians can, on top of the time it takes to learn technique, sight reading and knowledge of harmony and theory. Nearly anyone can pick up an instrument and learn how to play a piece but only a few can learn to improvise. That is why jazz is so much harder, not only do you need to play your instrument correctly, you also need to be able to create on the spot.

Fantastic. I think this was his best band (with Dewey Redmen) in terms of totally free spontaneous improvisation. I saw them play at least 30 times at the Village Vanguard in NYC. You would be listening to them play one tune and they'd spontaneously & suddenly go into a totally improvised other tune on the spot that would be amazingly beautiful. The spontanaeity of this band is what made them great. I would love to see or hear some of those moments if anyone recorded them (1972-1983/84).

These guys are killer musicians! If I'm not wrong, this is the only tour they did without a percussionist. Jaco's walking bass is unbelievably original, he virtually never goes where you'd think, what a great master! As for Joe, his phrases are so heartfelt and groovy at the same time! Wayne is essential as always but any of his intrusions is devastating, not to mention his sound, so unique. Finally Peter, INHO his snare-drum techinque, as shown here, would deserve to be made a method book of.

Zawinuls intro is an example of creativity at its highest level. i never heard any other version of this tune other than on the title album. Its strange hearing Jaco ad lib the walking bass line as oppossed to the synth 'ground bass' ostinato on the album. This arrangement is really OUT THERE !!
