Bitches Brew, though a jazz masterpiece, has never been an easy listen for me. Technically, it's unreal and was a breakthrough to a whole new plane for the genre. Me, I prefer Kind of Blue. With all due respect, Miles Davis IS jazz. Whether he's high or not, here is not the is issue. Nobody's perfect. Let's judge him on his legacy alone. Singlehandedly, he was at the forefront of every major jazz genre of the last 50 years, because he STARTED cool jazz in the 50s, modal jazz in the 60s and jazz rock fusion in the 70s. The first jazz musician with rock star status. Wynton Marsalis patterned his early albums AFTER Davis's 60s albums.

You're the one that's retarded, swedishpirates. Technically, some of Miles' best playing was from about 1968-1971. I don't think that Miles was high all the time when he performed during this period, but would you discount any of Charlie Parker's recordings because he may may have been high while making them? Or any of Lee Morgan's, for that matter?

Flying Foo Balls I heard that he raised his head and trumpet because as you blow on a trumpet fluid builds up and it equalled out that fluid. Miles could hear every note and distortion. You will see him also go to the side and empty out that fluid through the release valve. Miles was the man. Some people dont like him ((Stanley Crouch) but that was part of his style. Coolest muthafucka there was. Pro or con, he had style, his own.

One thing you need to understand was that Miles' playing underwent many changes between his start with "Bird" in the 40's and his "Second Great Quintet" with Hancock, Shorter et al...in the 60's Miles wanted to transcend "style": Except perhaps Dorham [in his mid-60's Blue Note sessions] the other players you cited had only one specific "sound", or, "style"...Trust me, if you try to play Dizzy/Bird/Bud "licks" over the changes to "Dolores", "Sorcerer", or "ESP", you will sound out of place...

This song is the reason I bought the Monk CD "Genius of Modern Music". My grandmother's name was Ruby. Its a special name to me and the first time I heard this song I was truly touched. I always thought so too, especially once he switched over to the big yellow gretches with BLACK DOTS, of all things. Somehow he makes them sound good but really, horrible sounding drums. Blakey too; his drums sounded like garbage towards the end there. Those wretched Pearls he played on, and those clangy A-Zildjians. Ugh.

I'm sorry, finch866...Tony WAS self taught. He went to Berklee at 15 to take lessons in reading music with Alan Dawson...but he could already play! He already played with Sam Rivers and went to New York with Jackie McLean short after that...to be hired immediately by Miles. Tony and Dawson only worked on charts and reading music. BTW: Dawson was incredible himself!

Today , I think he was a genius. I never knew he was a legend and therefore, I expected a different behavior, more stuck up, more extroverted. But he was calm, really calm and nice but he seemed boring. I didn't feel he was really wealthy. He drove a white BMW 320i and I think he was going to UC berkeley at the time-so the location/commute was perfect. Gerry Garcia also lived down the street when I was 2. My dad told me last week Tony was self taught. I don't know if that is true.

Tony Williams lived next door to me in the late 70s. I really didn't really know much about him other than he played drums and would practice from time to time. Four great musicians, undoubtly, and one overall, Mr. Shorter... but: is it sufficient to make great and interesting music? I'm not sure. Somebody speaks of "almost complete improvisation"...mmm...I think it's not correct; they use rhitmic patterns, bass "obligato", and so on. I think that also the Great Shorter follows the market demand of "acoustic jazz", without a real autonomous idea.

The thing is with duble and quadruple time (ie. 2/4 and 4/4) is that they're all pretty much interchangable. You can count this in 2/4, 4/4, 8/8, 2/2 and a whole bunch of others, but really all that does is imply different feel (half-time etc.). In improvised music, the feel could be changing the whole time so really, it's just easiest to think of it as 4/4 and feel it how you want.

All of this is amazing, but let me speak of Wayne Shorter in particular: while soloing (everywhere, but in this group especially), his phrasing is absolutely other-worldly. This video provides an amazing example of this. It's as if he's leading an expedition to another land during his solo- after he's done, he kind of glances towards Herbie, as if saying "help me explore this new land."

Ok, now we all know what a legend this guy is but just for a minute imagine actually being there in '69 and hearing Chick do this kind of thing, without knowing anything about his subsequent music/playing; You know, before this approach to avant-garde jazz became a cliche. It bends my mind as to how insanely fresh it must've sounded. I think i'm about to explode in a shower of JazzJizz!!!!

It's so strange that most of his work he dedicates to L. Ron. Even from the 70s. And of course a lot of his albums were inspired by his books. Amazing player though, I got into him mostly from the allstar drummers he plays with.

They should make a Jazz video game..where your a historian/ secret agent..and..you start out in the 40's with Louis Armstrong..and whoever..trying to stop KKK and other HATE groups from shutting shows down etc.. Live at the Newport Jazz Festival 1958 & 1963 on Columbia Jazz Masterpieces double disc on which a beautiful performance of Lite Blue can be heard. This is IMO one of the sweetest melodies Monk ever composed. It's like a child's love.

Monk is the real thing, if you haven't heard Monk you don't know what jazz is about.. it's so simple, so quite, so precise, so otherworldly.. It's more than an attitude, beeing "cool".. it's a way to see the world, in diferent colours, in diferent orders, with diferent conections.. men, maybe this version of this song is a little faster than the original.. but it doesn't loose its taste.. simply amazing

I had one tribute to Monk from Wynton, there are several not so popular numbers, but I dont remember Light Blue there. By the way, I think Wynton's arrangement is a disaster, it is too comical for such misterioso figure. Monk had been humorous but never losing his cool.

There's a great version on the "Thelonious Monk big band & quartet in concert" record from 1963. Many of these more obscure compositions are as great as the more known (and covered) tunes. For example, Gallop's Gallop, Who Knows and Think of one... And Rouse, what a tenor player...

My favorite tune from Monk, though it is not as hallmark as other standards. I have only heard another version from Johnny Griffin in Five Spot, anybody knows other version? Rouse is as unlyrical as ever, Monkish!

You can be good, or as in Miles case, great, without being a big P about it. He just never got comfortable with the general caucasian fan. And it was those white butts thjat filled the seats and bought the records that afforded him a terrific living. A little "simpatico" goes a long way. No matter, he remains the best.
