I only wish it had run for some more time during 94 and people had seen more of it. It would have dumped Gump in the Forrest and beat fiction to Pulp :-) The best movie to have not won an Oscar. This scene reminds me to look at senior citizens in a more accommodating way. This is the best movie, ever! Great scene, great acting, great direction. This scene wasnt even half as dramatic in the novel as it is in here. "Brooks was here" just seals it. Whitmore is amazing with the look in his eyes as he clutches the railing in the bus. Darabont, Tim Robbins, Morgan Freeman, James Whitmore will be remembered for this movie. It has the theme of hope. It has the theme of guy friendship (guy friendship minus the guns, booze and babe-chasing which is very rare in movies).

Two interesting points I've noticed. First, Haldermann and Erlichman were the ones who were brusque and rude to Helms, not the other way around. Whenever he visited the White House, they treated him like garbage. Stone turns this fact upside down by showing Helms ignoring Erlichman's extended hand. Second, he has Helms complaining about the choice of Gen. Kushman as DDCI. But the DDCI slot has always been a presidential appointee. Why would Helms complain? Makes no sense.

I agree. His performance was definitely over the top. Its hard to imagine any government official speaking to the President in such a way. Perhaps someone like Christopher Plummer would have done a better job preparing for and playing the role. Helms certainly sounds like a man of great ability. Its a shame that most people know very little about a man who contributed much to this country. I will have to make it a point to read his autobiography. Thanks for your insight, Dante.

I'll say no, for two reasons. One, Waterston is a known bleeding-heart liberal. He won't have taken the time to plough through Helm's autobiography, let alone study the man in a more detailed way. He probably just decided "I'll play this fucker like he's Satan". Two, he doesn't look, sound or act like Helms. Not even close. Helms was never so snide, pompous or disrespectful. He always was courteous and spoke in a calm, measured way.

Dantes I read a little about Helms also, he was referred to as "The Man Who Kept The Secrets." And was convicted of a misdemeanor in the process or after refusing to devulge certain info to the house. HE was received by colleagues w/a bowl of money to pay the fine at a loud gathering in D.C. But on the other hand ex CIA's have also said that the spying never made a difference in the Cold war. That in the end it was the money game that exhausted the commies.whats your take?

This scene is a bit long but it should have been left in the movie (at least a part of it should have been included) because it is very well written and the acting is great. I don't know if it adds anything to "Nixon" but it sure doesn't distract from the main plot. I don't understand why Stone didn't include it. He must have had his reasons, maybe he thought he was going too far or making it too obvious for us. Or maybe he thought the film was too long already. I don't know.

Never said it had anything to do with Shaw, did I? There are accounts that Kennedy's body arrived at Bethesda in a metal casket, not the coffin he was placed in at Parkland. There was a period on the plane when the body was unattended and could have been moved. It's just a theory, but Lifton makes a compelling argument. It's a lot more plausible than the theory (espoused in JFK) that the autopsy doctors screwed up or were lying.

You're right. It could have faded to black with "i hope i cross the border" and it might have been even more poignant. Still, this is one of the greatest endings to any movie regardless of genre.

Your first sentence is so how I would've liked this movie to end. I would like to think that the average movie-goer would be able to envision the last scene with their own hope, held in their own hearts. Braveboy12345's dictation of this final monologue makes it even more clear: 'A free man at the start of a long journey whose conclusion is uncertain.' Let it be uncertain. It must be uncertain. For then all we're left with is hope. And that is the point of this entire beautiful film.

I always wonder what other people think of this ending. I love it, but I think I'd also like just seeing the bus driving off into the distance as Red finishes saying "I hope..." as was Frank Darabont's original ending for the film. But as one studio exec says in the "making of" feature, you can't drag the audience through this Hell and expect them to be happy with an inconclusive ending. I tend to agree, but like I said, I would probably be ok with either ending. It is kind of nice to wonder...

The ending of the movie is very uplifting... but too Hollywood, IMO. The novella ends with Red's monologue, him about to violate his parole, and wondering if he can make it across the border. The outcome is up to the reader. The story has stayed with me for years... and I always think about it whenever I see a clip with Morgan Freeman or Tim Robbins, and I still wonder if Red made it. I hope so.
