Man I miss this; I used to see these guys maybe 3-4 times a year before Seattle's coolest venue changed into a health club; some of the hippest shows ever! My favorite Frisell lineup, and he always plays with great people. This group just had that once in a lifetime chemistry.

I agree about missing this band. He's been doing some gigs with Joey again I think. I loved the earlier version with Hank Roberts, too. I heard him not long ago with Tim Berne and it was just fantastic. Hank's been playing with Bill, too, just not with this band. Bill's my fav. Nobody else like him with all the different facets of his musicianship.

Frisell is amazing. Really his own man...he marches to no one else's beat. What's up with this guitar? W/ tele neck pickup? Gibson vol and tone knobs...weird shape. Man of many guitars. You get the sense this guy could pick up a K-mart guitar and get the same tone. Phenomenal phrasing and fluidity. Check the break on this tune at about 3:45. He's got this patented way of splitting the head of a tune wide open and letting everything spill out in this screaming emotional way.

For instance if you discover all the ways you can use your fingers and plectrums to articulate your style, well effects add another level of articulation. Amazing. I love that song. To the users commenting on Frisell's use of effects: I can only hear some reverb, giving a bit space to the performance. Anyway, most of the space is produced by drones. He always seems to have the open strings ringing. To me it's amazing how he a always get's his sound, no matter which guitar he is playing. If you want to hear frisell really "dry" and even funky, check out the album "down home" by Joey Baron, featuring Ron Carter and Arthur Blythe.

This is great! Frisell has been one of my biggest influences. The full video of this where you can see Scofield acting like a jerk to Frisell, is better than just this snippet of a solo. The crowd didn't even clap for Frisell after his solo. It's obvious that Frisell hasn't gotten the attention he deserves and this video had to be done in 1987 or 1988!

great player but it drove me mad at the tractor tavern in seattle how BF would never face the audience and let us see what/how the deuce he was actually playing it magic. you have to sit right at the back for any decent view. usually i arrived to late so i'd stay til the interval and then leave out of pique and frustration/ i guess youtube is the only reliable way to see this genius plucker.

gentlerhino- I have alwasy felt that Bill is very much like a painter in his approach. His playing is very atmospheric and can be dark and stormy or very light and misty as you describe. Very appropos. If I could play like this I would die a very happy man. wow... Bill, If you're reading this, thanks for what you do! You've made quite a few of us very high over the years! thanks for posting this. i saw these guys at the aztec club in philly in 87(god i'm gettin old), it was a great show. i could never figure out where the idea of putting frisell and scofield together came from..almost different ends of the spectrum to me. when i saw this after twenty years..i was glad i went. thanx again

Both albums of "Bass Desires" were wonderful. Does anyone remember that composition by Frisell on "Second Sight" called "Small Hands"? That was a song that has only made two appearences. One was on his collaboration with Vernon Reid called "Smash And Scatteration" and the was of course on "Second Sight." I'd love to hear this song redone by him. Like I said, I miss the old Frisell. Such an amazingly lyrical player and one of my biggest influences.

This is an amazing performance by both. Frisell sounds so lush and dark--I love it! Sco sounds wonderful too. But best of all is the fact that Frisell looks like a spitting image of Stephen King from his Creepshow days!! "...Oh Jordy Verrill! You lunkhead!" Lol!

Thank you so much for sharing this! Do you have any more? More importantly where are you getting this footage? I would love to know. Frisell has been a huge influence on me. He plays so beautifully. Scofield is good, but he never reached the kind of harmonic beauty Frisell's work has, but they are two different players. Just listen to the way Frisell comps for Scofield during his solo, so beautiful.

I will also say it doesn't matter what band Frisell plays in he is the dominate force behind it. His approach to harmony is so unique and really defines whatever group he's playing with. Even Scofield is lured into the Frisell harmonic web on this one. You can't help it. Frisell just has a way with music.
