While the scene with Juliette was powerful, I think that the play between the wife and Max was overlooked, and maybe drawn down. In my opinion, Max turned her on in ways she couldn't hide. The more Max went off the deep end, the more she got turned on. I think most people missed that.

De Niro was a god up until he made Backdraft. That film shoulda been about him and Sutherland. It seems from Cape Fear onward he gave up his title of the most dangerous movie cat out there. There's been a few high-points since (like Heat) but nothing to compare to all his earlier stuff. What a shame. I thought he was gonna show that the old guy actors are just as good as the young dogs. I hope he proves me wrong yet. I miss the thrill of racing to the cinema to see his latest.

It is rather startling that Robert de Niro is so sexually enigmatic considering the terrifying monster he has created for his character, what does it say about the human instinct? He is incredibly good in this film...really pushing the boundaries. Although he is one of my favourite actors, I have failed to be impressed by his comedy roles- they just don't suit him, unlike Jack Nicholson who seems to carry them off more effectively and with greater credibility.

I am intrigued by Juliette Lewis but she does seem to be given very similar parts in films so it is hard to distinguish how much is damn good acting and how much is she just being herself as she is fairly quirky. I've seen her perform live in the theatre but again a disappointingly predictable performance. Typecasting is never a good thing for actors.

He's just incredibly committed to his art, sheer discipline I guess,though he really suffered after Raging Bull & swore that he would never submit himself to such an unhealthy regime to gain weight ever again as the struggle to reverse such physical abuse was monumental.Oprah had similar problems with the Colour Purple and deeply regretted becoming so morbidly obese for a film. She said nothing was worth doing that to oneself. I found Hilary Swank's transformation amazing in Million Dollar Baby.

Apparently de Niro surprised poor Juliette with the improvised 'thumb insertion' as he had run it past the director only moments before shooting that scene, she must have been pretty freaked out at the time but it was incredibly effective and really worked in depicting this charismatic and yet sinister and terrifying man.
